About Socks Family Farm
The land, the plants and animals, and the Socks family
Socks Family Farm began as a homestead in October 2007, when our family purchased a parcel of land formerly part of the Urban farm in Cabot, VT. Bernard and Arecca Urban were dairy farmers, and in 1939, built the house where we now live. Their daughter, Velma Urban Smith, was our cherished neighbor. Velma passed in 2016.
In the 14 years we've been on this piece of land, we've learned to raise livestock, annual crops, food and wildlife perennials, and learned to build infrastructure from greenhouses to sheds to fences. We also have learned a lot of wiring, plumbing, and carpentry, bringing the Urban farmhouse back to a condition to last the next 80 years.
On our land, we enjoy the company of several species of amphibians, many insects and spiders, lots of birds and small mammals, and the occasional bear or moose. We enjoy the blackflies less, but it's part of the package.
